# Shop account book: what came in, what went out, and the balance after every line. > A shop account book: cash and card in, money out by category, a running balance, and a monthly summary sheet with totals per category and the net. The book computes the balance after every line and the totals at the bottom, and on the second sheet you type the first day of a month to see in, out and net for each category. It differs from the daily close because it covers all of the shop's money, not only the drawer, and from the expense log because it holds the money coming in as well. ## Columns - **In (cash)**: What went into the drawer: cash sales and collections. - **In (card/transfer)**: What went to the bank account without passing through the drawer. - **Category**: A drop-down with eleven categories; the monthly summary groups by it. - **Running balance**: Everything in − everything out up to this line; do not type it. ## Common questions ### How do I start the book with money already in hand? Make the first line the "Opening balance" category and put the amount under In (cash) or In (card/transfer). The balance starts from it, and it shows in the monthly summary if its date falls in the chosen month. ### Why does an amount not show in the monthly summary? Usually because the line has no category, a category typed differently from the list, or a date outside the month at the top of the summary. Pick the category from the list and enter the date as a real date. ### How many lines does the book hold? 300 lines come ready with formulas, enough for a month in a small shop.
