Asset

An asset is anything the shop owns that has value, such as cash, stock, equipment and money owed by customers.

What it means for a shop owner

Assets sit on one side of the balance sheet. Some turn to cash fast like stock, and some stay for years like a van. Total assets equal liabilities plus equity.

A worked example

You hold cash of 2,000, stock of 5,000 and a fridge of 1,000. Total assets are 8,000.
