Fiscal year
A fiscal year is the twelve-month period over which you measure profit and prepare accounts, and it can start in any month.
What it means for a shop owner
Many pick the calendar year, yet some choose a month when the season is quiet. Stick with it so you can compare year to year. Taxes and filings follow its limits.
A worked example
A year starting on 1 April ends on 31 March. Its profit is added up over those 12 months, not over the calendar year.
