A grocery stock count: the expiry date and shelf of each item.

A grocery count is a chance to spot what is close to expiring before it spoils, and to know where each item stands. This template adds expiry date and shelf, so you walk the shop shelf by shelf and write the nearest date for each item. It has sample rows for common grocery items with no brands, and the quantities are illustrations only.

Common questions

How do I use expiry dates during the count?

Write the nearest date for each item, then sort out those expiring within a month or two and move them to the front or reduce the price. That costs less than throwing them out later. In Dashing items have batches with expiry dates and the oldest sells first.

What size of difference is normal in a grocery?

Loose items sold by weight shift a little through drying and trimming, but packed items should not differ: a gap means a counting or sales error, or theft. Investigate every packed-item difference, however small.

Do I count the fridges with the shelves?

Count them on the same day but in a separate pass, and write the fridge in the shelf column. Do not leave the door open for long or the chilled goods spoil.

Dashing does this for every item, automatically, in your shop.
