Deposit

A deposit is part of the price a customer pays in advance to reserve an item or service, deducted from the final price.

What it means for a shop owner

It is not a sale yet; it is a duty on you to deliver the goods or give it back. Record it under the customer's name so it does not blend with sales cash, and agree beforehand whether it is returned on cancellation.

A worked example

A sofa costs 900 and the customer pays a 200 deposit. At delivery he pays 700, and if he cancels before then you decide whether the 200 is returned.
