Net sales

Net sales are gross sales after returns and discounts are subtracted, the amount the selling really brought in.

What it means for a shop owner

This is the number to build profit on, because discounts and returns never reached your pocket. If gross sales rise while net sales stay flat, you are discounting or taking back more than before.

A worked example

Gross sales are 1200 units, returns are 40 and discounts are 60. Net sales = 1200 - 40 - 60 = 1100 units.
