Opening stock

Opening stock is the quantity and value of goods you held at the moment you began recording in the system or started the period.

What it means for a shop owner

You get it from a real count before you start, not from a guess. Any mistake in it follows into every report after. Enter it once with a clear date and let later movements adjust it.

A worked example

On day one you count 200 pieces at a cost of 4 each. Opening stock is 200 worth 800.
