Free cashier software for shops: what 'free' means (Oct 2026)
How to judge free cashier software: caps, trials that end, paid add-ons, and what Dashing's free plan for one branch includes, with no expiry date.

The short answer: free cashier software exists, but "free" covers three different things: a free program with no end date, a free trial that stops after a few days, and a free tool that charges small amounts whenever you need something more. Dashing offers the first kind: a free plan for the whole shop, one branch, with no card, no expiry date and no cap on selling. It is not a trial. This guide shows how to tell the three apart before you enter your shop's data, what "free" usually hides, and where our product is not enough.
We are the Dashing team, so we are a vendor too. We say what fits you better elsewhere and where Dashing falls short. Every figure about another product comes from the vendor's own page, with the date.
Why look for free software at all?
A small shop owner wants to try without risk. A paper notebook costs nothing and Excel is already on the computer, so paying for software before seeing that it saves time is hard to justify. That is reasonable. The trouble is that "free" is sometimes bait: you enter your items, your customers and weeks of work, and the payment request arrives when leaving has become expensive. The questions below expose that before it happens.
How do I know the free is real? Seven questions
- Does it have an end date? A free 14- or 30-day trial is not a free plan. Ask what happens on day 31. If the till stops, it was a trial.
- Is selling capped? Some plans cap invoices per month. Daftra, an Arabic cloud accounting service, caps its entry plan at 100 invoices a month (the $240-a-year plan, pricing page, October 2026). A shop selling 50 items a day passes that in three days.
- What is paid separately? The till may be free while advanced stock or staff accounts cost money. You then pay as the shop grows.
- Is the price per user or per branch? A vendor that counts users charges you for hiring a second cashier.
- Does it ask for a card at sign-up? A card on file often means an automatic renewal later.
- Does it work offline, and what stops when it does? A dropped connection is a daily event in many shops, so the question is practical.
- Can I leave with my data? If you cannot export items, customers and invoices, the free product is a lock.
A documented example: a free global POS app
Loyverse is a global point-of-sale app that is free at its core, and it claims more than 350,000 active merchants (the company's own claim, October 2026). What its pricing page shows, as we read it in October 2026:
- Free: the core POS, loyalty, several stores, essential inventory, and 31 days of analytics.
- Paid add-ons: unlimited sales history ($5 a month or $50 a year per store), employee management ($5 a month per employee), and advanced inventory ($25 a month or $250 a year per store).
- No built-in accounting, and its features page lists no customer debt ledger and no multi-currency.
- Offline, sales work, but refunds are blocked, new customers cannot be added, stock levels are not shown, and card terminals do not work (its help page, October 2026).
- Sorani Kurdish: we did not find it among its languages.
A one-store shop with two staff wanting advanced inventory pays about $420 a year by the arithmetic of those prices. An owner who needs none of that pays nothing.
What does "free" mean in Dashing?
Dashing's free plan is the whole shop for one branch, free forever, and not a trial.
- No card at sign-up, and no period after which the cashier stops.
- No cap on selling on any plan, no per-transaction fee and no share of card sales.
- A full cashier: barcode, product grid, held sales, discounts, returns, cash, card or credit, and it works offline.
- Stock by unit and batch, with CSV import.
- Customers, their debts, and a statement link you share on WhatsApp, with unlimited users.
- Full accounting: expenses, income statement, balance sheet, month close, and an account for your accountant.
- Dash, the AI assistant: 20 messages a day.
- Three languages (Arabic, Sorani Kurdish, English) and nightly backups for everyone.
- No ads inside the app and no selling of your data, and you can export your data to Excel at any time.
What happens at sign-up: every new shop starts with 14 days on the yearly plan, no card, and then continues on the free plan by itself. Nobody asks you for anything on day 15.
What is the yearly plan for?
Three things only: a second branch, Dash at 500 messages a day instead of 20, and priority WhatsApp replies with a guided setup session on screen. The yearly plan is 420,000 IQD in Iraq (about 35,000 IQD a month) and about 300 USD elsewhere, shown in your currency. You pay once through a WhatsApp message, with no card and no automatic renewal, and a 14-day money-back option. If your shop has one branch and you need none of those things, you never have to pay.
Where is Dashing not enough?
We say it plainly, because a wrong choice costs weeks of work:
- No e-invoicing and no tax-authority link. None exists in Iraq today, but if your shop is in a country that requires it, that rules Dashing out.
- No native app. Dashing runs in the browser on a PC, tablet or phone, and can be installed from the browser to work offline. There is no app-store app.
- Financial reports and Dash need a connection. The cashier does not, but the balance sheet and income statement open online. Signing in needs a connection too.
- No automatic bank feeds and no fixed-asset screen (depreciation is calculated, but has no screen yet).
- Debt reminders are sent by your staff with one tap. Dashing sends no automatic reminders.
- Scales are not connected, there is no customer-facing display, and receipts are 80 mm only.
- Books run in one currency per shop. A quote can be priced in another currency at a rate you type, but the cashier works in the books' currency.
- One branch on the free plan. Every extra branch means the yearly plan.
What about Excel and the notebook?
They are enough if you work alone, sell for cash and stock few items. They do not take stock off at the moment of sale, they do not tell you who is late paying, and they do not count the drawer against what should be in it. If the hurdle is moving over, the plan in From the notebook and Excel to a system in a week shows how.
How to test any free product in an hour
- Sign up without a card. If it asks for one, find out why.
- Enter ten items with their barcodes and sell three.
- Switch the internet off on the device and sell another. Switch it on and check the sale arrived once.
- Record a credit sale to a customer and open their statement as the customer will see it.
- Open the income statement. Are the figures from the sales you just made?
- Export your data. If you find the button, you know you can leave.
Still on paper? The free customer debts tool and cash count tool in the browser let you try the habits first, and the Excel cashier tool shows what a spreadsheet can and cannot do for a till.

Frequently asked questions
Does the free plan expire? No. It stays free as long as you use it. The first 14 days on the yearly plan are on us, and afterwards the shop continues on the free plan.
Do I need a bank card? No, neither at sign-up nor later. Payment for the yearly plan, if you choose it, is made once through a WhatsApp message with no automatic renewal.
Do I need to download a program? No. Open the site in your browser and sign up. It can be installed from the browser so it works offline.
What happens to my data if I never subscribe? It stays. The free plan is not temporary, your data is yours, and your invoices and entries export to Excel at any time.
For everything the free plan includes see the free plan, and for prices see pricing. The offline cashier explains how sales behave when the connection drops, and customers and debts how a statement reaches your customer.
