Batch and expiry date
A batch is a quantity of one item that arrived together with one lot number and one expiry date, which lets you track what is nearing expiry.
What it means for a shop owner
One item may sit in three batches with three dates, and a single total is not enough. Recording the batch tells you what to sell first and what to pull from the shelf, and lets you trace one batch if a problem appears.
A worked example
Milk cartons: batch L1 has 30 cartons expiring at month end, batch L2 has 50 expiring two months later. The total is 80, but L1 sells first.
