Cash drawer

The cash drawer is the till tray that holds the day's cash takings, and its balance must match the cash received and paid out in the records.

What it means for a shop owner

Expected cash = opening float + cash received - cash paid out. Any difference at closing points to wrong change, an unrecorded refund or money that left without an entry. Open with a known amount and close with a count so you find the cause on the day, not a week later.

A worked example

You open with 100, receive 900 in cash and pay out 150 in expenses. Expected = 100 + 900 - 150 = 850. If you count 840, you are 10 short.
