Petty cash

Petty cash is a small sum you keep for little daily costs such as water or a delivery fare, with each payment out recorded.

What it means for a shop owner

The aim is to stop dipping into the sales drawer for every small cost, which muddles the books. Fix the amount once, spend from it against a slip, then top it up by what was spent. The expense without a slip is the first one to vanish from the books.

A worked example

You start the week with petty cash of 200 and spend 35 on water and 25 on delivery. 140 is left, and you top it up by 60 to get back to 200.
