Clearance
Clearance is selling slow or out-of-season items at very low prices to empty the store and recover whatever cash you can.
What it means for a shop owner
It is the last step after normal markdowns. Selling at a small loss is better than cash stuck and goods spoiling. Gather the items in one place and say clearly they cannot be returned.
A worked example
A shirt that cost 10 and was priced at 18 did not sell. In clearance you sell it at 8, losing 2 a piece, and get 8 back from locked cash.
