Markdown
A markdown is a lasting or temporary cut to an item price to move it faster, unlike a discount given to a single customer.
What it means for a shop owner
You turn to it for slow stock, goods near expiry, or end of season. A small early cut beats waiting until no margin is left. Check the new price is still above cost.
A worked example
An item priced 50 costs 30. Cut it by 20 percent to 40 and you still make 10 per piece.
