Discount

A discount is an amount or a percentage you take off the usual selling price to win a sale or reward a customer.

What it means for a shop owner

It can apply to one item or to the whole bill. Every discount lowers the profit on that sale, so know your margin before you offer one. Record it on the bill so it shows in the report instead of vanishing inside the price.

A worked example

An item sells for 50 and costs 40. A 10% discount drops the price to 45, so profit falls from 10 to 5: a 10% discount ate half the profit.
