Payment gateway

A payment gateway is a service that carries the customer's card details safely from your online store to the bank and returns the result.

What it means for a shop owner

It usually takes a fee on each transaction. Never store card numbers yourself, since the gateway handles that. Choose one that works in your country and takes your currency.

A worked example

An online sale of 200 with a 2.5 percent fee leaves you 195.
