Stocktake variance
Stocktake variance is the gap between the quantity you actually counted and the quantity the system says you have.
What it means for a shop owner
It can come from theft, damage, a keying error or a sale not recorded. Find the cause before you fix the number, then record the correction with a note. A small, repeated gap on one item deserves tracking.
A worked example
The system says 40 and you counted 36. The variance is minus 4, and at a cost of 5 per piece the loss is 20.
