Tax-exempt

Tax-exempt describes an item, customer or activity on which the law charges no tax.

What it means for a shop owner

Do not add tax to exempt sales, and you usually cannot deduct input tax linked to them. Keep proof of the exemption, such as the customer certificate. Check the law when in doubt.

A worked example

Books sell for 400 without tax. The invoice is 400 only, with no tax line.
