Batch number

A batch number is a code given to a group of items made or received together, so they can be traced if a problem shows up.

What it means for a shop owner

It matters for food, medicine and cosmetics, where a whole batch can be pulled from the market. Record it on receiving and on selling. You can then tell who bought the faulty batch.

A worked example

A delivery of 120 tubs arrives under batch number B-0412. You sold 45, so if the batch is recalled you know 75 are still with you.
