Serial number
A serial number is a unique number for one specific unit, never repeated on any other unit of the same item.
What it means for a shop owner
It is used for devices, phones and tyres sold with a warranty. By recording it with the bill you know which customer bought which unit and can check the warranty fast. It differs from a batch number, which groups many units.
A worked example
You sold 3 phones of the same model with different serial numbers. When one comes back under warranty, its number alone points to the bill.
