Cash register

A cash register is a machine or system that records each sale, works out the total and holds the cash in a drawer.

What it means for a shop owner

Modern registers are programs on a computer or tablet that add reports and stock. Their main value is that they prevent small fraud by recording every sale. Choose one that keeps working when the internet drops.

A worked example

At day end the register says 1800 and the drawer holds 1795, so you explain the 5 gap before closing.
