Consignment

Consignment is stock a supplier places in your shop that stays his property, and you pay for it only when it sells.

What it means for a shop owner

You pay nothing upfront and carry no risk of slow sales, but your margin is usually smaller. Record what you received, sold and returned, because the gap is your responsibility. Do not mix it with your own stock.

A worked example

You receive 30 pieces on consignment, sell 18 and return 6. You pay the supplier for 18 pieces, and 6 stay with you unsold.
