Credit note

A credit note is a document that lowers what a customer owes on an earlier invoice, usually for a return or a late discount.

What it means for a shop owner

You do not edit the original invoice; you issue a new document that points to it, so the record stays clear to everyone. The amount is either taken off the customer's debt or paid back, as agreed.

A worked example

An invoice for 500, and the customer returns goods worth 80. A credit note for 80 leaves him owing 420.
