Invoice number
An invoice number is a unique running number that tells each invoice you issue apart from the others.
What it means for a shop owner
A sequence without gaps makes checking easier, and many tax systems require it. Never reuse the number of a cancelled invoice. Let the software generate it automatically.
A worked example
After invoice 1041 comes 1042, and if you cancel 1041 it stays on record as cancelled.
