Receipt vs invoice

An invoice asks for payment or states the sale in detail, while a receipt proves that the money was actually received.

What it means for a shop owner

In a cash sale they join in one slip. In a credit sale the invoice comes first and the receipt when payment lands. Keep both, since each is a different proof.

A worked example

You issue an invoice of 600 on the 1st. The customer pays 200 on the 10th and gets a receipt for 200, leaving 400 on the invoice.
