Barcode
A barcode is a pattern of bars or a square code that carries an item number, so a scanner can read it and show the item and price.
What it means for a shop owner
It speeds up selling, avoids price-typing mistakes and makes counting easier because you scan instead of typing. Most packaged goods arrive with one, and for what you make or repack yourself you print your own label.
A worked example
You scan a juice carton, the reader picks up the number and adds the item to the bill at 12. Scanning 5 cartons adds 60 without typing a single number.
