Back order
A back order is a customer order for an item you have run out of, which you record and fill when stock arrives from the supplier.
What it means for a shop owner
It keeps the sale instead of letting the customer go elsewhere, provided you give a realistic date. Do not take the full amount before delivery unless it is clearly agreed. Check open back orders every day.
A worked example
A customer wants 5 pieces and you have only 2. You hand over 2 now and record 3 as a back order, delivered when the supplier arrives in 6 days.
