Barcode scanner
A barcode scanner is a device that reads barcode lines and sends the number to the software, so the item and its price appear on the bill.
What it means for a shop owner
It speeds up checkout and cuts typing mistakes. There are cabled and wireless types, and a phone camera can sometimes do the job. Choose one that reads slightly damaged codes.
A worked example
A cashier typing a code by hand adds an item in 8 seconds. A scanner does it in 1 second, saving 7 seconds per item.
