Cross-docking
Cross-docking is moving goods from the arriving truck straight onto the outgoing one without storing them in the warehouse.
What it means for a shop owner
It suits a wholesaler whose arriving goods are already sold to named customers. It saves storage space and counting time, but it needs tight timing. It does not work for items you sell off the shelf.
A worked example
A load of 200 cartons arrives and 150 are sold to shop A and 50 to shop B. You sort them at the door and they leave the same day without entering the store.
