Cash float

A cash float is a fixed amount of small cash you leave in the drawer at the start of each shift so you can give change.

What it means for a shop owner

Keep it fixed and written down by denomination, and count it at the start and end of the shift. If the end differs from it after taking out sales, there is an overage or shortage. Do not mix it with your profits.

A worked example

The float is 200. At the end of the shift the drawer holds 1450 and cash sales were 1250, so the difference is zero.
